Tips To Avoid a Back-to-School DUI

It’s the middle of August and that can only mean one thing – school is back in session! Students are all wrapped up in the excitement of being reunited with friends from last year and meeting new ones. Before you run out to the local bars to celebrate being back on campus there are a couple things you should consider. Last year in Tennessee, there were almost 6,000 DUI arrests. A large percentage of those arrests were people in their early twenties. Here are a couple things to think about before going out on the town.
Friends at a party drinking

·         Assign a designated driver. Yes, it is obvious and you’ve heard it all before, but thousands of people decide not to follow this tip. You and your friends should choose a designated driver before leaving home. That way, you know that you will have a ride home and you won’t be tempted to drive yourself. If you don’t have a friend who can drive, call a taxi. Taxi fares can be a little bit pricey, but you can usually split the cost between you and your friends. Would you rather pay a $20 cab fare or a DUI fine, court costs and the cost of a lawyer? (Hint: the cab fare is going to be a much cheaper choice.)

·         Don’t attempt to walk home. Think you can avoid a DUI by walking home? Yes, you absolutely can. However, if you are too intoxicated while walking home, you can be charged with public intoxication. Not to mention that walking home at night is dangerous enough by itself, much less when you’ve had too much to drink. Therefore, it is still a much better decision to have a designated driver or call a cab.

·         Think before you act. A DUI isn’t the only reason you should choose not to drive drunk. Remember that any time you drive under the influence, you are putting your life and others in danger. Don’t let drinking and driving cost you your life or someone else’s.

College is full of fun times, but even with a degree, it can be hard to get a job in the future with a DUI charge on your record. Make the smart decision and arrange for a safe ride home. You and your parents will be much happier if you do!
